I pushed really hard this past weekend and actually met a single goal - to get everything out of the notebook and logged into the manuscript.
The main fic is up to 21,000+ words now. Still have lots of things to do to it, add to it, beat into it. Have a lot of stuff written on the hardcopy manuscript to transcribe. Figure this one is going to be a while before being birthed.
Worked on the a/u myth fic the first few days then realized I needed to meet my notebook goal and worked on that instead.
Now have two new fics started on the laptop, both of them ideas I have had on the back burner for a while and they finally started sprouting a bit. One is my take on the real Ryuichi and one is about an 'interesting' type of Japanese costume *evil grin*. I cannot work on them for long because the keyboard does get to me and my poor gimpy hands.
looking around
Joules, the dig was just too cool! We don't have anything like that around here, not enough history to even throw a stick at!
And those Chinese lessons, what a hoot!
Talon, you are looking GOOD! Even with a food-covered chibi on your lap, heheh! Your tale about Rhys' headstone is amazing. And the final product is so beautiful! What a special and one-of-a-kind tribute!
A'lestrel, if Noah would have left the ham-hams behind what would our house special be at the Tree?
Happy birthday to your cubs, Lutra! Sounds like a lot of fun is happening at your house! Wish we could join in!
feeling down
rat has to work three days a week, 12 hours a day, 6am to 6pm Thursday, Friday and Saturday. First day was last Friday. I missed him SO much Friday and Saturday. I would be doing something or watching something and I am so used to turning to him and sharing it immediately with him, and he was not there. Yeah, I am really dependent at times. When I went out Friday I just told myself it was time for me to become independent again like I had been for so many years and just go do what I needed to do. I know I HAVE to make this sacrifice right now, just hoping the dream job will happen for him and he will be on first shift.
He packs boxes of tapes and DVDs to send to Blockbuster stores. He is the one who 'builds' those special cases with the Blockbuster labels inside so that is what you take home, not the actual 'jewelcase' of the product. He might have to pack 31 copies of one title to go to one store.
The interesting thing is he has to be at work at 5:45am at the very latest or he is marked off as not being there. I am hoping this will help cure his chronic tardiness.
I ended up staying awake all night Thursday-Friday and Friday-Saturday for some reason, sitting at the computer as rat stumbled out of bed at 4:30am to shower and get ready for work. I definitely will NOT do this now that I am back to work.
I am still feeling quite exhausted and it did not help matters I had to go back to work today. It was pretty slow but we had to chase four people out of the lab because they were not multimedia students. It is going to get worse when the library and the main drop-in lab in the computer building are shut down after the July 3rd and won't open again until late August.
Enough about work and whining about when rat is not around. I am off to do some more writing.
Why am I still awake? Bleh... Well, I HAVE been tweaking some lemon, listening to/semi-watching the Food Channel and wanting to eat everything.
Joules, the Gremlins pages are GREAT! Happy Anniversary to your blog, too! Heheh... Isn't the first anniversary gift supposed to be paper? Think that's appropriate for all of us!
By the time I get to bed rat will be getting up... there goes the congrats-on-a-new-job nookie.... Maybe I will peg him with a "Honey, you're Home!" romp later today, if I am awake...
Damn, it's Friday, where did my holiday go? And I still did not get a fic finished, blast it all!
I friggin' started another one on the laptop! Argh!
I have been concentrating on the a/u and the monster but this little idea just had to escape before I lost it for good. Maybe THAT one can be a quickie. Yeah, right, when donkeys fly, onna....
Goku And Vegeta
The traditional and undeclared love between our two favorite saiya-jins . They love each other but they are too proud to let the other knows. Stop playing this little game and tell the person you love , that you do if you want to be with him(her). Your obsession of him(her) is so big that you guys are the two only ones that can't realise your love.Anyway, you both are rivals but it's only because you want to be seme.
So ratling has finally gotten what he terms a temporary 'macjob' (referring to grunt jobs like McDonalds) but I don't care at the moment. I don't care he has to get up at 4:30am to be there at 6am to work 38 hours a week, three days a week including Saturdays for only $6 an hour at Blockbuster in the warehouse. At least he has SOMETHING!
Have to thank Jacque a LOT for telling him about the temp service in McKinney.
And since he applied for an IT job at Blockbuster earlier but hasn't heard anything, he hopes by getting his foot in the door in the warehouse may help his chances for future IT positions.
The perfect job is still bloody pending. He took a letter over to them, saying how much he would like to discuss the processes more. I am just hoping his persistence and interest will help tip the scales in his favor for the job.
Anyway, I think I will attempt to write some, since I haven't done much of that today. I watched Zetsuai and Bronze on the new DVD player, emptied out crap email from my office account and answered some work questions (yeah, working even when on vacation), loaded bits and pieces of Office 97 to the laptop so I would have spellcheck in word (didn't load powerpoint, excel or access because the laptop is strictly for writing and watching movies) and dealt with banking crap.
Yes, it arrived and I must admit it is taking a bit to get used to it. The keyboard is much wider than I am used to so I am spelling terribly. The keys are a bit stiff so they are killing my fingers. Hope I can get used to it without blowing out my hands first. No floppy drive like I thought I would get so I have a bid out for a compatable external one for $10, auction ending Sunday. The mouse is one of those little eraser ones, which is a pain but I am adapting to it to a degree. I am seriously considering getting an external optical mouse or one of those wireless ones you hold in your palm. The DVD player is KILLER. It plays VCDs without complaint and beautifully, using the old version of Windows Player! My regular PC would not let me watch anything until I upgraded to the big one with all those visualizations and crap. The one actual DVD I played, an official Gravitation DVD with uber-crappy English subtitles, had little drop-outs in the soundtrack, which was strange. It could be the DVD itself or it could be the processor not being able to keep up. No drop-out with the VCDs.
On an aside note, if I had seen this version of Gravitation first I would have wondered what all the fuss was about, the subtitles absolutely SUCK! None of the humour is in place, all the names of the charas are incorrect and many times the subtitles just do not make sense what is being said. Thank Heavens for fan-subs!
oekaki
The oekaki board we attempted to set up is dead in the water and will not happen, at least not with the Oekaki Potato. We finally got it working once, even though the guy did not want to deal with us after we got the paid initial help from him. Then I wanted to change the settings so we tried to reinstall it and it went flat on its face and will not get back up.
So until we find another applet to try my own oekaki board hopes are dashed. Since I am writing right now instead doing a lot of actual drawing it is not too pressing. I will check into it later.
Right now I have to deal with a bunch of crappy banking shit.
Joules! The issue with Flash is your final file will still be large if you import raster/bitmap graphics onto the timeline. Your graphics need to be vector for the Flash file to remain small. You would have to take them into Illustrator or FreeHand and convert them, and since I have not used either program I do not know how accurate the conversion would be.
Also, if anyone wishes to see the graphic they would need to install the Flash Player. Some people refuse to do this, even now.
Maybe slicing the graphic would be the compromise. That way you can control the size of each slice so the sections with no detail can be small in bits and the sections needing more detail can be pumped up more. Yes, you can drop an animated gif in the table cell you designate! *Nudge* ImageReady is designed for this task!
Consider this as a temporary solution so you can get the graphic posted.
It is hard to believe...
I have been running rambles, rants and raves for a year now? Hard to imagine.
Joules, thanks for the idea of putting something here to commemorate. I didn't get around to doing so on the website when its birthday came around....
There are days and weeks I just don't make any headway on getting things done.
And speaking of which, I felt that poke, Talon, and had been thinking about it for a few days now. I think today I will attempt to finish that up if I can keep Grunt at bay for a while.
We got a call from Jacque today, saying she was going to eCampus training this evening at LeCroy (right next to my work) and did we want to rendevous? This was good news because it meant she actually has gotten the job as the online anthropologist instructor, yay!
She brought Becca along and we took her over to the new building to show my new digs, went to the Asian market to get some more Pocky, walk around and look at the weird food, stopped by Half-Price Books to browse (I got a used thesaurus so I don't have to depend on thesaurus.com or the microsoft crap built into Word), then we went to Red Lobster to wait for Jacque to get out of class. rat had a Red Lobster coupon worth $50 and he wanted to spent it immediately, so we did.
Next week Jacque has to come back down to do all the official paperwork to become a 'real' teacher and we plan on meeting again. Nice to see them again.
I think I am getting about four hours of actual writing in a day, sometimes more. Damned a/u story is already 5000 words.... Trying to figure out a few ways to cut the down on the detail and gloss over sections to get to the next major part. rat read it today and initially called it 'dry', then changed his description to 'emotionally distant'. He says it is because I am writing in third person so the charas' emotional reactions are not being experienced by the reader. I told him I just hadn't gotten to that just yet and still building the backstory, but it was true I was not delving into it as deeply as other stories, partly because the story needs to get DONE, partly because I am attempting a different style than POV.
Well, I know of at least one other gremlin in the household who has been with me for years, the Jewelry Gremlin. I never know when I will be looking for a specific piece of jewelry and it is just gone. And it is gone for months, sometimes years. The gremlin has a taste for my currently favorite necklace or only one earring of a special pair. Years ago I mentioned it to a neo-celt friend who said she had the same problem so she got to the point she would talk to hers and bribe it with other pieces to get specific ones back. It works here, sometimes.... I am still ticked it has kept one of my very expensive antique garnet earrings for about eight years now...
And Murphy hates VCDs when the yaoi, whether implied or blatant, hasn't come on almost immediately. He keeps screwing with my Mirage of Blaze vcds, which play great on the DVD player, but freeze up the entire computer, not just the player. I actually yelled out "Murphy!" last night when the vcd just kept acting screwy. Walked over to the DVD player and not a glitch could be seen.
I know what to do with those kinds of 'tools', Murphy, so watch your balls!
still at it
Yep, wrote more today, still on the a/u. Started working on grumpy's point of view a bit and sprinkled some dialogue around since I had none as of yet.
Kai did some nice work with his drawing! I am impressed he picked up on some of the sketchlines of the original!
And I am glad Kai's appointment went well too!
Wee Beasties
Gremlins is a real hoot! I love the mix of fantasy and computer tech! The details of the various fleshies, especially Ken!, hilarious!
Taipo has sibs or other relatives because my office computer bitches about low disk space and insufficient memory as soon as it boots up every morning. Same with my boss's machine.
And Murphy! He cracks me up! The blinking neon 'tool' is a killer in the 'working' pic! It would not surprise me if he used both 'that' and his horns to terrorize my CPU! I did not think he would be smart enough to figure out the name of buckethead's gremlin!
Definitely want to put the portraits in the original art section of my site when I finally get the new version up and running.
HP
Gonna wait on the latest HP book. Will check to see if my best friend the librarian has a spare copy about and borrow it like I borrowed the other four. I am kinda surprised with myself, I do not even own paperback copies of the books... rat told me the name of the person who dies in the latest. It's okay, I don't have any problem with knowing. Won't say anything here right now in case it would spoil it for those who do not want to know.
Yay!
VERY happy you are feeling better, Talon! About friggin' time!
Writing
Been pretty much off-line this weekend, writing and researching. The Greek myth a/u has been occupying the majority of my time. At one point I had to dig into my plethora of historical clothing books to find information of the dye colours available to the ancient Greeks. Interesting, seems blue was not an option, they did not have it. Had to settle for a sea green instead. Men's hairstyles are interesting too. Had to decide on a specific time frame for both clothing and hair styles for continuity. Yeah, yeah, I am getting anal about it, but it is the details that make a story real.
bleh
I get so tired of the same old food, something rat can eat and eat and not blink at for weeks at a time. With his almost non-existent tastebuds because of his lack of olfactory sensation he can happily eat the same crap day in, day out. And I do mean crap. In my book frozen breaded chicken patties equals crap. I used to eat them but finally said never again about two years ago. I abhor breaded food anyway so I was only eating them to be nice. Never again.
Me wanting Chinese food tonight brought up the fact he had no ready cash, which then brought up the fact he has not found even a dirt job. I am very stressed and I told him he should have had a job, any job, a month ago, and accused him of wanting to dry up my resources before seriously finding anything.
It does not help matters we saw a TV news article about how this is the worse job market EVER in the states. So logically I know it is not just him but I still think he could at least find some job slinging hash or working on computers or some temp job so something was coming into the house.
Me being off this next week is probably not going to make him happy because I will be chewing on his ass to get out there and pound the pavement.
Ugh, I will stop moaning now and get back to my escape, currently writing, especially since Evan has been over pestering Joules and Butch lately. Muses travelling the Internet, an amusing concept...
You are a black cat, stubborn yet friendly, you stick to your values and preferences, and no one can convince you otherwise! You are the legendary cat of mystery.

By Ellen Wulfhorst
NEW YORK (Reuters) - Despite the bone through his nose, his shaved head and pierced face, the 25-year-old pacing a seedy stretch of
New York sidewalk admitted he was terrified of what he was about to do.
But after a few minutes, a couple cigarettes and several deep breaths, he sat in the basement of a storefront tattoo parlor, closed his eyes and let a friend split his tongue down the middle with a scalpel.
The latest trend among teens and 20-somethings who indulge in so-called extreme body modification, forking one's tongue like a serpent's "is an art form," said T.J. McGillis, who offers the service for a $250 charge.
"Everybody wants to get it done. It could be the next mainstream thing aside from piercing," he said.
That may be an exaggeration. The number of people with split tongues is estimated at 1,500 to 2,000 people by the editor of a Web-based magazine devoted to body modification, but the trend is attracting enough attention that a few U.S. state legislatures have moved to ban the procedure.
Ian, the young man with the bone through his nose who did not want to reveal his last name, opted for tongue splitting after earlier adventures left him with huge rings in his ears, silver barbells piercing his face, myriad tattoos and who-knows-what-else under his baggy shirt and pants.
"I like the way it looks," he said, listing his reasons. "Two, I think it will be more fun during oral sex and the girls will get a kick out of it. Three, everyone and their mother has their tongue pierced and four, I'm an idiot."
The process is nothing short of gory. In Ian's case, his tongue was clamped in place, numbed and slit 2 inches (5 cm) up the middle, looking uncomfortably like a piece of raw liver freshly cut by a butcher.
Other methods entail tying increasingly tighter pieces of thread through a pierced hole or cutting with a laser.
Blood gushed out of Ian's mouth and over the silver barbell in
his lip for a few minutes, then abated with several doses of mouthwash.
"Go home and pull it apart," McGillis ordered him, suggesting
a regimen of separating the two halves each morning and night to
prevent reattachment.
After splitting his tongue, Emrys Yetz, 20, said it wasn't long before he could move each half independently and do party tricks like picking up pens and pencils.
"It's done to better yourself," he said, opening his mouth to wiggle each half like a snail waving its antennae.
Yetz argues tongue splitting is no different than a far more
socially acceptable face lift or breast enhancement. The only downside,
he said, is eating ice cream, since it's harder to make a scoop of your
tongue when it's split in two.
Not surprisingly, doctors say there are more downsides to tongue-splitting than dripping ice cream.
"There's the potential for life-threatening hemorrhage and the potential for life-threatening infection," said Dr. Lee Pollan, an oral surgeon based in Rochester, New York.
If that's not enough, he added, tongue-splitting can damage speech and taste and cause permanent numbness.
And reattaching a split tongue can be a complex process of reconstructive surgery and skin grafts, he added.
Dire warnings notwithstanding, tongue splitting is kids being kids, said psychology professor Stephen Franzoi at Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, who specializes in issues of physical attractiveness and body esteem.
It's a form of self-expression, alienation, rejecting mainstream culture and asserting independence, he said.
Comparing tongue splitters to young people wearing long hair and ragged jeans in the 1960s, he said: "This is the same psychological process, albeit more extreme.
"We encourage kids to be independent and express themselves and find their own personal identity," he said. "Every generation has a different way to find themselves in our culture. Some of them are more extreme than others."
After splitting his tongue, Ian made plans to pierce each tip, even as one waiting friend dampened his hope that the girls would love it.
"I think it's gross. It creeps me out," said hairdresser Jill Johnson. "I've dated guys with tattoos all over. I've seen it all, but that's too much for me. Imagine when you're 60 years old and you have your tongue like that."
But for believers in modification, a split tongue is merely a start. Split penises, sliced lengthwise in half, are not unheard of among aficionados.
Well... *shuffles feet*, the first time I ever heard that song was on one of John Denver's albums, I think it was the Rocky Mountain High one. Yeah, yeah, I was a big fan for a long time, long before we found out we were actually distantly related by marriage. Before I lost my hands to carpel tunnel I could play a lot of those songs on the guitar. I was a pretty good picker.
You are most welcome, Ken
I think of Ken as a kindred spirit and a part of the group, like the ratling is, not really active but definitely valued members of our little community. Kai is as well, since he is a writer now!
When they get a little older, Lutra's cubs and Talon's chibi will probably be sucked in as well...
I haven't gotten my pics uploaded yet but here is a link to some pics done by a visitor to the faire. I found these when I was looking at some faire links.
I thought I saw visiting pirates quite a bit this year...
How do you think the fanart in each anime section should be set up?
1.) By Character 9 56%
2.) By Technique (pencil, CG, ink, etc.) 0 0%
3.) Both Character and Technique 5 31%
4.) Who cares? I just wanna see smut! 2 13%

Thanks to everyone who voted! Now I will change the interface I am working on to reflect your choice - by character.
Evan has been surprisingly quiet, but still giving me ideas to try. He just has not been insistent about drawing, which has been a relief.
[growl] That's because he's been over here, fooling around with Butch... The pair of them are giving me no bloody peace: my backlog of pics to draw has doubled in the last few days...
LOL! Sorry, Joules, that is just too funny! rat laughed when I read him the above, too. He then remarked Evan and Butch are probably being bad to you together, with Evan forcing you to draw and work in CG and Butch crashing your computer when you get close to getting the CG completed.
Well, that was quick. Went out to eBay and bought the following for only $359:
IBM Thinkpad 600 Laptop, PII 266 Mhz Processor, 128 MB Ram, 4 Gig Hard Drive, Brilliant, 13.3 TFT Active Color Screen, Internal DVD Drive, DVD Decoder card, Untested Battery, Internal 56k Modem, Power supply/ac adapter/battery charger, All Major ports: USB, Floppy, 2 PCMCIA's, microphone, headphone, Inferred, Mouse/keyboard, Monitor, Printer, Dock Port, Super fast Trackpoint mouse, Internal speakers, Windows 98se Loaded, about 5 lbs with an approximate 1.4'' profile
Will pay for it tonight and hopefully get it next week.
Hope you have a nice and relaxing day doing whatever you want to do, or nothing at all!
Next week
Since I am having cabin fever about being at work I have asked to take a week of vacation next week so I can work on writing, get back to drawing and attempt to finish the website interface. Understand, I DO love my job, the first job I have loved since I worked at the needlecraft store. The staff dynamic works very well which has usually been a real issue in the past. Right now I am feeling very creative and I need to funnel that energy to what I want to do, not what I have to do. I would have taken off this week but the Spring 2004 schedule is due Thursday and I need to be there to put the final touches on it after the bosses go over it one more time on Wednesday. It is really strange and kinda nice they actually depend on me to keep this process organized, and they trust me to do it right.
Anyway, I AM looking forward to being off and being able to stay up as long as I need to while Grunt is breathing over me. Evan has been surprisingly quiet, but still giving me ideas to try. He just has not been insistent about drawing, which has been a relief. I really want to work on these stories. Now if I can only keep myself OFF the web, reading other's work, and concentrate on my own... I guess I will need to make some time during each day to get my fix, but actually time the event so I don't get sucked in and lose valuable writing time.
writing tools
Also plan on shopping for a used laptop so I can write in bed. I am feeling a bit desperate about getting all the scribbles transcribed into the document for some reason. rat is going to do a pre-shop for me this week and see what is available. All I really need is something sorta fast with Word on it, that's it, just a portable word processor. If I can get bells and whistles and not pay a lot for it I may consider a beefer machine.
Thought I would get some more out of the notebook yesterday but found after I began putting stuff into the electronic document I was adding detail to the few words I had gotten on the page and not getting much transcribed. Then I just fell away from that section with only a third of the scribble page logged and found myself knee-deep in lemon land. That was interesting, trying to get minute details lined up just so. Still haven't completed that section but it is shaping up okay.
Have more to say but no time right now to say it, lunch is almost over. Perhaps later.
Horribly anti-social today - think I am channelling rat bastard Eiri. Could not even visit best friends today... It's REALLY bad and contact with people will not be good. rat is over with our best friends, thankfully, so he is not being subjected to this.
Just to let you know, the planet's hidden oekaki board is almost complete! When everything is has been tested and proves to be working I will be sending out invites to those artistically inclined. Basically this is going to be a place where I can practice the tools and play around, so others I have been poking at about drawing on one and feeling a bit shy about going to a public board might can take advantage of its hidden qualities as well. Of course, at any time I may consider making it live, but you will be given fair warning long before I do so. I think some of you will excel at it and blow my pitiful scribblings away. The point is we will learn from each other and HAVE FUN drawing. This will probably be the closest we will get to having an artists workshop until someone wins the lottery and we can all meet in one place for an art and writing party. Trust me, if we would ever win a big pot the rat already knows this is something that would slated for some of the money.
Sorry, I was going to call last night but a headache sent me to bed at 7pm and I did not wake up until the thunderstorm blew through at midnight. Then I fell asleep again until 7am this morning. Still have a bit of a headache, as does rat, but we both do feel better and it sounds like you are feeling better because of the good drugs.
Sorry, Joules, no idea about being-bad-to-Zaabon fics. The poor lad just does not get the fics like he should.
rat left a voice message at the company. We are still waiting. I am still seething.
Okay, girl, it is going to be okay. And whatever your new development is, if it is that vile I hope it goes away soon.
Told you to be careful about getting aliens in your body....
Anyway, will be thinking about you today! It will help me keep my mind off....
*anger*
rat did NOT get a call yesterday. He interviewed with the perfect company Monday week - all the machines he knows they have, he would be boss and make more money than before, close to home, an Asian group so the work ethic would be there - and they said they could call back in a week to let him know. We were on pins and needles all week, trying NOT to think about it, not trying to jinx it by talking about it, and now these people did not have the decency to tell him no yesterday.
I am very disappointed and depressed about it. rat is going to call them to confirm the rejection today because he says he needs to continue looking and not wait for this to open up if perchance they are dealing with a hiring freeze or not hiring until the guy actually retires or the like.
Considering I did not go anywhere this weekend I feel like it was a good one.
Loved seeing the gremlins coming to life! Once again Joules is going at it like demons and her energy and drive astounds me.
Long chat with Talon until Ripley and I both needed sleep.
17,280 words. That's the latest count on the main fic. Still searching for the notes I made on the Greek myth fic so I can add them to the doc file. Hmm, I think I know where that is... hold on... SCORE! In a pocket of my purse! Oh shit, I have written all around the margins, around sections, up and down... gonna have to sit down and figure out what goes where before tackling it again. But I have stuck the papers in with "I Woke Up Slowly" so I will have both with me today at work. Grunt is SO happy!
My hands are slowly feeling better but I am still avoiding typing for the most part.
Time to get ready for the office. *sigh* Am stuck at the front counter again for most of the day, four days a week. Hope the official schedule comes out soon so others will help take the load off. Stupid me, being so responsible...
Still, I used the time to draw onna's gremlin Murphy. I'm absolutely certain he looks nothing at all like the image onna has of him, but that's OK - if you don't want him, onna, I'll use him elsewhere; he won't go to waste! Also drew his sidekick 'wee dram' (a.k.a. Dramataphyde - a toe-fungus, I'm informed), the rat's gremlin, but not so happy with that one, needs some work...
Well, I suspect Murphy will be just fine however he looks, since I do not have any preconceived notions or any clue what he looks like. I left that all up to your excellent creative mind and talent!
We don't know if that's how to spell Dramataphyde-rat could not find how to spell it so we just made up the spelling. It works and the Wee Dram is a riot! A Scottish gremlin would be just what rat would have, and a thrifty one too!
working on it!
Yep! I AM working on that beta, Talon!
working on it - part two!
And I am working on (ack!) three stories at the same time! I may actually finish one, one of these days! Really getting back to the first one heavily, which is really good.
oekaki
Drawing has been put on hold, for just a bit. Keeping myself from getting rusty doing a daily oekaki again. And rat has gotten all the tech stuff together so I can set one up for me personally.
Oh, the joys of notepad. Let's you write all sorts of things and with just a little knowledge you can code a webpage! It makes small files, rides around on a floppy and I can work on it as my hands allow.
words and such
Joules, glad you liked that lost words article! rat thought you might it amusing! And I am envious of your access to that "Victorian" dictionary. rat laughed about the watermelon entry and still mentions it.
Oh yeah, and the river trip looked like a lot of fun! I can imagine rat wanting to go on it. For some reason he likes these kinds of things, which is strange since he is not one to do the beach or other water-type adventures.
from Joules' blog:
ROFLMAO!!! Sneaked a peek at my Welsh dictionary. No Raddish, alas, but Rabbit is cwningen. And Carrot is moron... (I'm sayin' nuffink...)
Made me laugh so hard!!!
health
I think it is a bit weird how situations happening to my online friends are mirrored with people around me here. Joules' husband, Ken, is currently dealing with the same health issues my workmate Steve's wife just finished dealing with. Good news is she has a clean bill of health and now all she has to do is to go in for checkups periodically, since the crap likes to hide in cells.
Now Talon is dealing with a colonoscopy and that's something Steve is getting ready to have done himself.
Okay, no one get pregnant or Steve will be up the creek! heheh...
FYI: I AM worried about you, Talon...
Resting my hands this week has helped a tiny bit. Been hand-writing on the story-that-would-not-end a little bit. Amazing the errors I am finding after being away from it for over a month. At this rate it may be done by Xmas... but don't hold your breath.
Zorun
Ah, the Zorun issue. Well, I happen to like Zorun, Mahrayne and Kelapa together, the three of them. I have a special fondness for the menage a trois concept since I was in just that kind of relationship for about four months. Yep, a relationship. Since that probably will never happen in the storyline (possessive monkeys) I will just let the story go on its merry way and enjoy it.
Bruce!
Oh, how yummy is THAT boy, Joules! Evan is eyeing him so watch out! I am SO envious of your foreshortening skills!
Oekaki
rat is looking into getting an oekaki board set up at witzend since we have the space to do so. Mostly it will be for me so I am not limited to one drawing per day as I am currently at the board I frequent. Then I could work on the skills at my leisure. And maybe convince Joules and Xero Sky to draw there *nudge* so they can get their feet wet without having so many eyes looking at them at the big boards. Of course, nightswan-sensei is ALWAYS welcome and will make me work harder just by seeing the marvels she can do with the software.
Picky eating
Best not let the cubs know the rat is a picky eater, Lutra. Then they will think they can get away with it as adults! Have a nice trip!
By avoiding the computer at the office most of the day yesterday I was able to do this companion piece to chibi Eiri last night. I only typed the string of "Yuki"s once then kept adding the same string, just changing the colours in the oekaki settings.
Hope to avoid typing again today.
PMS headache woke me up this morning so I am trying the headache medicine again so I can get to work.
My carpel tunnel has flaired its ugly head again full force so typing has to be curbed and reserved for the office until I feel better. I completely avoided the computer when I got home last night and just vegetated in front of the tube, watching poorly subtitled Yu Yu Hakusho until we both started drifting off. We went to bed at 10pm last night and I only worked about 10 minutes on the monster fic (discovering repeated words needing thesaurus help) before going out too.
Going to search my office desk for my wrist braces and begin wearing them in earnest again, even when sleeping. It is really bothersome not being able to feel the tips of my fingers. If I am not careful I will lose more feeling and I will not be able to pick up items without chancing dropping the item at any time. I dropped too many drinking glasses when I first got this affliction because I just could not judge how much pressure to use to hold it. It is difficult to do so when you have no feeling in your fingers and hands.
Since it is early morning I am able to get a little out now before work, where I will be pounding a keyboard. Gotta search for some pencils so I can type with the eraser ends. Yep, I am adaptable. It makes me a slow typist but at least I am still producing.
Attempting to learn Maki Murakami's chibi style, which is all over the manga, to try and illustrate the silly writing I posted earlier. rat suggested I really needed to make it a mini comic because although he could see what I was talking about, others may not. Ugh, another project...
So I tried it last night on the oekaki board, after sketching at breakfast yesterday morning. Yes, I keep a notepad and pen and try to scribble something every morning. Usually the stuff sucks but it gets me thinking about things, especially since the pen makes it permanent.
I'm feeling sloomy. Let's pull out some lubber-wort!
thinking about Joules and her comments about languages... rat sent this to me and I am sharing it with you.
The weird world of lost words
06/01/2003
By PAULA LAROCQUE / The Dallas Morning News
I recently consulted several dictionaries to check on the spelling of "spondulicks," which is slang for money or cash, and was surprised not to find it. Sure, it's an antique word, maybe even moribund. But dead and gone? From the dictionary untimely ripped?
Like all living things, the language is in constant flux, changing slightly daily, gaining new words and losing old. At 600,000 recorded words and counting, English has a huge lexicon – hundreds of thousands more than any other language. And as the lexicon grows, some words are lost, forgotten, or unneeded. They may be housed elsewhere for a while – in the many volumes of the Oxford English Dictionary, say, or in a collection of lost words.
In any case, it's easier to discover a word's birthday than its obituary. In a foreword to Poplollies and Bellibones: A Celebration of Lost Words, wordsmith Willard Espy writes that it's best to consider words merely missing or presumed dead: "Even after being embalmed by linguists and formally laid out in their coffins for interment, words have a way of sitting up, calling for a sip of water to restore their strength and returning as lively as ten-year-old children to their verbal rounds."
Poplollies and Bellibones, by Susan Sperling, lists many of the "presumed dead." Thrip, brangle, or murfle once led perfectly respectable lives, for example, and it would be nice if they were resurrected.
Thrip was especially useful – it meant to snap one's fingers. The expressive brangle named what we now less suggestively call an argument. Murfle? A pimple or a zit. Paggle meant to bulge or hang loosely. Would you rather have a murfle and a paggle, or a pimple and a potgut?
Too bad we lost snertle, meaning to snicker. Or brool, a low, deep murmuring. Blutter was a good word for blurting something out. A hufty-tufty was a boorish braggart. Sloomy was how we felt when we were lazy and drowsy. Pash was a nice emphatic word for forehead. Ribble meant wrinkle or furrow – as in ribbling your pash.
Some antique words make so much sense that it's a wonder we lost them. One such is downsteepy, meaning precipitous or steep. Fellowfeeling was an expressive word for empathy. Turngiddy meant dizzy, and kew-kaw meant upside down. Wink-a-peeps were eyes. Flesh-spades were fingernails. Chinkers were coins. Kill-priest was port wine.
We could still use blob-tale, a gossip. Same goes for the crush-room, a theater hall or lobby where the audience went between acts. A fearbabe was something designed to scare the baby. Chair day was gentle idiom for old age – that time of life spent largely in rest and inactivity.
Do we have so many words for infidelity that we no longer have room for the evocative bedswerver or spousebreak? Have we a substitute for smellsmock, an errant clergyman or, more broadly, a licentious man?
Where's our common word for feeling happy and sad at the same time? One considers nostalgic, poignant, sentimental, melancholy, but they fall short. Once, however, we had merry-go-sorry – or chantpleure, which means to sing and weep at the same time.
Some lost words should stay lost, however. What we call junk food, ugly enough in its own right, once was called lubber-wort. Belly-timber was food, and to glop was to swallow greedily. A muckender was a bib. A kiss was the unromantic lipclap. Pleasure was far less pleasant when it was adlubescence (accent on bes ). And I guess we can do without snotter-clout, a handkerchief, or sparrow-fart, which meant daybreak. The cosmetic we call eyeshadow once was calliblephary (accent on bleph), and rouge or blusher was called fucus.
I'm not making this up, you know.
Back to that old word spondulicks: I found it. It was at rest in the commodious Oxford English Dictionary, with a proverbial robe over its knees. Its chair day, presumably. "Aha!" I bluttered in adlubescence when I cast my wink-a-peeps on it, slapping my pash and thripping my fingers. "There you are!"
I could have chantpleured.

Have to meet my mother at 8:30am so we get to the faire before opening gate. We want to get our palms read (saved up $ for this) first thing in the morning too. It is going to be another friggin' hot day so we will want to leave when it gets bad out there.
HAPPY BELATED BIRTHDAY, DANGLEMATE!!!
Such an utterly fucking baka I for not looking at blogs yesterday morning to know this...
con
We took lousy pics with a borrowed digital camera of mostly bad costumes yesterday. I will be posting them on the official site, with or without the travel log, in the near future.
And now I need to run around like demons to get ready for the faire.
Thanks: --> to Lia, my sensei, who has inspired me to draw again. I
wouldn't be doing this without your support, Domo Arigato!
--> to Talon, for sending me her fabulous fics, inspiring me with her writing to draw my first
illustration for a story and actually liking what I drew.
--> to Dasia, for her words of encouragement when drawing her original chara.
--> to Joules, a wonderful epic fic writer, for liking my art enough to want to post them with Talon's
and her own stories.
--> to Lutra, the other half of the epic team, for being so supportive.
--> to Jacque' & Becca Raddittzu, we met on eBay as bidder and sellers and now we are face-to-face
friends. You showed us the real DBZ with your fansubs. It's all your fault the house is full of
doujinshi! *LOL*
